As well as crossing the S100M line Inglourious Basterds; the Quentin Tarantinos’ World War II pic wound up beating Halloween II for second place because of a better-than-expected -49% hold – hardly the -70% expected. But The Weinstein Co has been in such dire financial straits that it couldn’t even hold Halloween II until October.

Inglourious Basterds made its debut on the international market taking first place with $27.49 million on 2650 screens in 22 markets. This includes first place openings in a number of major markets, led by France where it opened with $6.09 million on 500 screens; this is not really surprising as Quentin Tarantino is extremely popular in that market. The U.K. was close behind with $5.92 million on 444 screens, while it also topped the charts in Germany ($4.20 million on 439 screens) and in Australia ($2.56 million on 266). On the other hand, the film was stuck in second place in Russia, but still performed well with $2.55 million on 340 screens. So far the film is tracking well ahead of Kill Bill – Volume 1 and should become his biggest hit of all time topping Pulp Fiction.

Weekend Report: ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Scalps the Box Office
by Brandon Gray
|

August 24, 2009
With a smashing debut for Inglourious Basterds, overall business was a-boomin.’ The increase over the same weekend last year was around 20 percent, making for one of the busier late August weekends on record.
Storming approximately 4,400 screens at 3,165 sites, Inglourious Basterdsground out $38.1 million, ranking as the highest-grossing opening ever for a movie released in the second half of August (and 11th for the month as a whole). More importantly, among World War 2-themed pictures, onlyPearl Harbor and Saving Private Ryan had greater initial attendance, andBasterds more than quadrupled the debut of recent release, Defiance, and exceeded Valkyrie‘s first three days by 58 percent. Basterds also set a new high for writer-director Quentin Tarantino, surpassing the start of Kill Bill Vol. 2 ($25.1 million) and more than tripling the debut of his last movie, box office disappointment Grindhouse.
Inglourious Basterds succeeded where Grindhouse failed thanks to a focused marketing campaign and more appealing premise: it was clearly presented as a “men on a mission” story a la The Dirty Dozen, Saving Private Ryan and others, and it was centered by bankable leading man Brad Pitt. World War 2 is a popular subject matter for movies (despite the misfires of this decade), and Basterds stood out in its advertising with Tarantino’s gruesome and humorous sensibility. It promised to be a blunt, over-the-top picture about “killin’ Nazis” (one of Hollywood’s favorite bogeymen). Distributor The Weinstein Company’s exit polling indicated that 58 percent of the audience was male and 72 percent was aged 25 and older, which was a composition similar toValkyrie and Tropic Thunder, the top-grossing movie of last August that had a tonal likeness to Basterds.
TETRO – Official site
Francis Ford Coppola directs his first original screenplay since The Conversation.
Plot: “Set in Argentina, with the reunion of two brothers, the story follows the rivalries born out of creative differences passed down through generations of an artistic Italian immigrant family.”
Tetro is a 2009 drama film written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Vincent Gallo, Alden Ehrenreich and Maribel Verdú. Filming took place in 2008 in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Patagonia (Argentina), and Spain. Tetro was limited released in the United States on June 11, 2009.

Production:
In February 2007, director Francis Ford Coppola announced that he would produce and direct the film Tetro, based on a script that he had written. Production was scheduled to begin in Buenos Aires, Argentina in late 2007. Coppola was attracted to Argentina as a location, “I knew Argentina has a great cultural, artistic, literary, musical, cinema tradition, and I like those kinds of atmospheres very much because you usually find creative people to work with.” Production did not begin as scheduled, and by March 2008, Vincent Gallo and Maribel Verdu joined the cast. The Spanish company Tornasol Films and the Italian company BIM Distribuzione signed with the director to co-produce the film. Production began on March 31, 2008 with a budget of $15 million, with Coppola using the production style similar to his previous film Youth Without Youth.[5] Filming took place in La Boca in Buenos Aires and other parts of the capital city. Filming also followed in the Andean foothills in Patagonia and at the Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante, Spain. Production concluded in June.
In May 2008, during filming in Argentina, the Argentina Actors Association, an actors’ union, claimed that production of Tetro was shut down due to union members working on the film without a contract. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Local press reports say that script changes and communication problems between the multi-national cast and crew have extended filming days beyond regularly scheduled hours, and that some of the Argentine actors are still not certain of their salary.” The director’s spokesperson, Kathleen Talbert, denied that production was halted, saying, “There are no holds on shooting, no problem with actors. In fact, the majority of the Argentine actors have already wrapped the shooting.” By the end of the month, the union said the issue was resolved, reporting, “The lawyers for the producers presented the necessary documentation and recognized the errors that they had made. So now they are able to continue with production.” In contrast, Talbert reiterated that there had been no issue, and production was never halted.

The entire project cast $15,000,000 to make and was shot on Sony HDW-F900 cameras and edited using Apple Final Cut on Apple Mac computers in a purpose designed large screen edit suite built by Walter Murch.
Romantic comedy starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Russell is rough and tumble reporter looking to get out of the news racket by marrying and becoming a house wife after her divorce from newspaper publisher Grant.
Just when she is about to leave town with her husband-to-be the still lovesick Grant drafts her to cover one final breaking news sensation. Along with plenty of laughs and fast paced dialog this film provides a witty and cynical look at news business.
This gloriously funny romp directed by Howard Hawks is rightly remembered as one of the fastest-talking movies ever made. Originally done as ‘The Front Page’, the play by Hecht and McArthur takes on new life here as the character of Hildy Johnson metamorphoses in this version to be a sparky woman (played by Rosalind Russell), former wife of the harassed columnist Walter Burns (played with characteristic bewilderment and charm by Cary Grant). Hildy is about to marry again, to the nice but dull Bruce Baldwin (played by Ralph Bellamy as a character so boring he ‘is like Ralph Bellamy’ – how Hollywood liked its in-jokes).
8½ is about Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni), an Italian director who has lost all inspiration for his upcoming movie, and it’s too late to back out. And aside from the fact that he can’t make the film, his mistress, wife, producer, and all the rest of his friends, are pressuring him about one thing or another. So he retreats into his dreams to shelter himself from the pressure, and there, he finds inspiration to make his new film, and face the world.
Original Trailer
To fully appreciate the international box-office bonanza Divorce, Italian Style (Divorzio All’Italiana), one must remember that back in 1962, divorce was illegal in Italy.
Synopsis: Baron Ferdinando Cefalú (Marcello Mastroianni) is a Sicilian nobleman would love to unload his demanding, sex-starved, monumentally unappealing wife, Rosalia (Daniela Rocca), but he can’t take the legal means open to his American counterparts. Ferdinando can, however, kill off his wife and receive a light sentence…provided he catches the lady committing adultery. The trick now is to make his plate-of-potatoes spouse attractive enough so that some other man will accommodate Ferdinando by cuckolding him. Divorce, Italian Style not only cleaned up financially, but also won several international film awards, as well as an Oscar nomination for Marcello Mastroianni.

This documentray, The End, reveals the bloody history and confessions of the cockney gangster.

Buried deep in a Variety story about Overnight Films (spotted by the eagle eyes of Brian Henne!) was the revelation of the full, weird cast list for Robert Rodriguez’ Machete, based on his fake trailer from Grindhouse (hey, it’s a vaporfilm that coalesced!). Also revealed (at least to me, but I haven’t really been paying that much attention) is the fact that Rodriguez will co-direct the film with Ethan Maniquis.

Universal and Imagine have plucked THE ORIGINALS a drama written by Bryce Dallas Howard and writing partner Dane Charbeneau that could serve as a directing vehicle for her father, Ron Howard.
THE ORIGINALS is an ensemble film about a group of twentysomethings who reconvene for a weekend in New York after learning that the teacher who shaped their childhoods has fallen into a mysterious coma.
Howard is represented by ICM and Management 360.

Kurt Wimmer has been nabbed to write the script for Columbia Pictures’ new version of TOTAL RECALL.
The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.
The studio is keeping mum on the slant of the new version, simply calling it a “contemporized adaptation.” Neal H. Moritz is developing and producing the project through his Original Films banner.

Matt Johnson sold TRANS AM to Warner Bros. The action script centers on a disgraced sheriff’s deputy and a repentant getaway driver who must elude a federal manhunt when they join forces to bring an escaped bank robber to justice. The action unfolds along the Mississippi River in the vein of a Deep South-set “48 HRS.”
Johnson’s credits include the 2004 thriller TORQUE.
A behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of one of the classics of modern cinema Dr. Strangelove, originally titled Edge of Doom. Including interviews with many members of the cast and crew of this story about the scramble by the heads of state to head off a rogue general’s attempt to launch a nuclear war, this film gives fans a wealth of new information on the work and effort that went into bringing the film to fruition.

“On Friday, NPR reported that the deadly swine flu combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before, thus leading us to suspect it was cooked up in a lab.
Swine flu panic is spreading in Mexico and soldiers are patrolling the streets after it was confirmed that human to human transmission is occurring and that the virus is a brand new strain which is seemingly affecting young, healthy people the worst. Questions about the source of the outbreak are also being asked after a public health official said that the virus was cultured in a laboratory.
This strain of swine influenza thats been cultured in a laboratory is something thats not been seen anywhere actually in the United States and the world, so this is actually a new strain of influenza thats been identified, said Dr. John Carlo, Dallas Co. Medical Director

Ten Things You’re Not Supposed to Know about the Swine Flu Vaccine
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
Let’s not beat around the bush on this issue: The swine flu vaccines now being prepared for mass injection into infants, children, teens and adults have never been tested and won’t be tested before the injections begin. In Europe, where flu vaccines are typically tested on hundreds (or thousands) of people before being unleashed on the masses, the European Medicines Agency is allowing companies to skip the testing process entirely.
And yet, amazingly, people are lining up to take the vaccine, absent any safety testing whatsoever. When the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. announced a swine flu vaccine trial beginning in early August, it was inundated with phone calls and emails from people desperate to play the role of human guinea pigs. The power of fear to herd sheeple into vaccine injections is simply amazing…
Back in Europe, of course, everybody gets to be a guinea pig since no testing will be done on the vaccine at all. Even worse, the European vaccines will be using adjuvants — chemicals used to multiply the potency of the active ingredients in vaccines.
Notably, there is absolutely no safety data on the use of adjuvants in infants and expectant mothers — the two groups being most aggressively targeted by the swine flu vaccine pushers. The leads us to the disturbing conclusion that the swine flu vaccine could be a modern medical disaster. It’s untested and un-tried. Its ingredients are potentially quite dangerous, and the adjuvants being used in the European vaccines are suspected of causing neurological disorders.
Paralyzed by vaccines
I probably don’t need to remind you that in 1976, a failed swine flu vaccine caused irreparable damage to the nervous systems of hundreds of people, paralyzing many. Medical doctors gave the problem a name, of course, to make it sound like they knew what they were talking about: Guillain-Barre syndrome. (Notably, they never called it “Toxic Vaccine Syndrome” because that would be too informative.)
But the fact remains that doctors never knew how the vaccines caused these severe problems, and if the same event played out today, all the doctors and vaccine pushers would undoubtedly deny any link between the vaccines and paralysis altogether. (That’s what’s happening today with the debate over vaccines and autism: Complete denial.)
In fact, there are a whole lot of things you’ll never be told by health authorities about the upcoming swine flu vaccine. For your amusement, I’ve written down the ten most obvious ones and published them below.
Ten things you’re not supposed to know about the swine flu vaccine
(At least, not by anyone in authority…)
#1 – The vaccine production was “rushed” and the vaccine has never been tested on humans. Do you like to play guinea pig for Big Pharma? If so, line up for your swine flu vaccine this fall…
#2 – Swine flu vaccines contain dangerous adjuvants that cause an inflammatory response in the body. This is why they are suspected of causing autism and other neurological disorders.
#3 – The swine flu vaccine could actually increase your risk of death from swine flu by altering (or suppressing) your immune system response. There is zero evidence that even seasonal flu shots offer any meaningful protection for people who take the jabs. Vaccines are the snake oil of modern medicine.
#4 – Doctors still don’t know why the 1976 swine flu vaccines paralyzed so many people. And that means they really have no clue whether the upcoming vaccine might cause the same devastating side effects. (And they’re not testing it, either…)
#5 – Even if the swine flu vaccine kills you, the drug companies aren’t responsible. The U.S. government has granted drug companies complete immunity against vaccine product liability. Thanks to that blanket immunity, drug companies have no incentive to make safe vaccines, because they only get paid based on quantity, not safety (zero liability).
#6 – No swine flu vaccine works as well as vitamin D to protect you from influenza. That’s an inconvenient scientific fact that the U.S. government, the FDA and Big Pharma hope the people never realize.
#7 – Even if the swine flu vaccine actually works, mathematically speaking if everyone else around you gets the vaccine, you don’t need one! (Because it can’t spread through the population you hang with.) So even if you believe in the vaccine, all you need to do is encourage your friends to go get vaccinated…
#8 – Drug companies are making billions of dollars from the production of swine flu vaccines. That money comes out of your pocket — even if you don’t get the jab — because it’s all paid by the taxpayers.
#9 – When people start dying in larger numbers from the swine flu, rest assured that many of them will be the very people who got the swine flu vaccine. Doctors will explain this away with their typical Big Pharma logic: “The number saved is far greater than the number lost.” Of course, the number “saved” is entirely fictional… imaginary… and exists only in their own warped heads.
#10 – The swine flu vaccine centers that will crop up all over the world in the coming months aren’t completely useless: They will provide an easy way to identify large groups of really stupid people. (Too bad there isn’t some sort of blue dye that we could tag ‘em with for future reference…)
The lottery, they say, is a tax on people who can’t do math. Similarly, flu vaccines are a tax on people who don’t understand health.

According to the CDC, the seasonal flu infects 15 to 60 million Americans each year, hospitalizes about 200,000 & KILLS about 36,000. That’s 800+ hospitalizations & over 250 DEATHS EACH DAY during flu season.
There’s panic in the streets over a flu outbreak. “Projections are that this virus will kill 1 million Americans,” the nation’s top health official has warned.
The virus is swine flu. But the date is 1976. And the projection, it turns out, is off by 999,999 deaths. Direct ones, that is. The hastily developed vaccine killed or crippled hundreds. Sadly, the current hysteria outbreak threatens devastation on a worldwide scale.
Writing, 8 – 12 hours a day, that’s what. Yes after years of distraction and procrastinations, I finally sat down and got my writing head on, I know it’s been a long time coming.
Firstly I’m reworking chelsea Smile, as it’s currently titled, and not with the same writing process as it was created because back then I knew fuck-all about writing screenplays. At least now I have a modicum of knowledge I can apply.
Secondly I’m going over all the other screenplays I’ve either written or planned and have them all in order, ready to be turned into saleable products.
I work in shifts and have little breaks but basically I’m on it. Updates on this blog, facebook and twitter. Gee — I think you’ll know when I’m done on one pretty soon.
